Equipment

  • large bowl
  • whisk
  • baking sheet
  • parchment paper

Ingredients

Bun Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2.25 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Mixing and Kneading

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  • Add the warm milk, egg, and melted butter, then mix until a shaggy dough forms.

First Rise

  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Second Rise

  • Gently deflate the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between each.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the top of the buns with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon of water) and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Cooling

  • Remove the buns from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the egg-washed buns before baking. These buns are best when fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or frozen for longer storage.
