Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Whisk
  • Large heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer
  • Candy thermometer
  • Funnel
  • Wire rack
  • Paper towels

Ingredients

Funnel Cake Batter

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Frying and Topping

  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for deep frying)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine Ingredients

  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined and a smooth batter forms. Be careful not to overmix the batter.

Heat the Oil

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C). Use a candy thermometer to ensure the oil reaches the correct temperature.

Fry the Funnel Cakes

  • Pour about 1/2 cup of batter into a funnel with your finger covering the opening. Hold the funnel over the hot oil and release your finger, moving the funnel in a circular motion to create a lacy design. Fry for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown.

Serve

  • Remove the funnel cake from the oil and place it on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter. Serve with fresh fruit, whipped cream, or chocolate syrup for a delightful treat.
