For Garnish

  • ¼ cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate drizzle
  • Pinch sea salt flakes

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan, lining it with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl for the banana bread layer, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla extract, then stir in the mashed bananas.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Add the wet banana mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Spread this banana bread batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.

Brownie Layer

  • Clean the bowls and then in a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt for the brownie layer.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract, then fold in the chocolate chips.

Assemble and Bake

  • Gently spoon the brownie batter over the banana bread layer, spreading it carefully to cover the surface.
  • For an optional cream cheese swirl, beat together cream cheese, sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla extract until smooth, then dollop over the brownie layer and swirl with a knife.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs but not wet batter.

Cool and Garnish

  • Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting them out.
  • Optionally, garnish with sliced banana, chopped walnuts, chocolate drizzle, and sea salt flakes before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can toast the walnuts before adding them as a garnish. Ensure bananas are very ripe for the best banana bread flavor.
