  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 15 pieces caramel candies, unwrapped
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease an 8x8 inch baking pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.

Making the Dough

  • In a large bowl, cream together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

Combining Ingredients

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in half of the chocolate chips.

Assembling the Bars

  • Press half of the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the caramel candies with the heavy cream, stirring until smooth. Pour the melted caramel over the dough in the pan, then crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer. Sprinkle with the remaining chocolate chips.

Baking

  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set. Let the bars cool completely in the pan before cutting into 5 equal portions and serving.

Notes

For an extra touch, sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt before baking to enhance the caramel flavor. These bars can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
