Instructions

Growing Guacamole Instructions

  • Carefully remove the pit from a ripe avocado and wash off any remaining fruit pulp.
  • Insert 3-4 toothpicks evenly around the middle of the avocado pit, then suspend the pit broad-end down over a glass of water, ensuring the bottom inch is submerged.
  • Place the glass in a warm spot out of direct sunlight, changing the water every few days to prevent mold.
  • Once the stem reaches 6-7 inches, prune it back to about 3 inches to encourage new growth.
  • When the stem regrows to 6-7 inches and has leaves, plant the pit in an 8-10 inch pot with rich potting soil, leaving half of the pit exposed above the soil.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but avoid overwatering.

Notes

Patience is key! It can take several weeks for the avocado pit to sprout, and even then, growing a fruit-bearing avocado tree from a pit at home can be challenging and may take several years, not 8 weeks. This guide focuses on the initial sprouting and planting. Ensure proper drainage for your plant pot to prevent root rot.
