Main Ingredients

  • 9 cups rice cereal squares (such as Chex)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter, then microwave for 1 minute; stir, and continue microwaving in 30-second intervals until smooth.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  • Pour the warm chocolate mixture over the cereal, stirring gently with a rubber spatula until all the cereal is evenly coated.
  • Transfer half of the coated cereal to a large resealable bag, add half of the powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake until the cereal is thoroughly coated.
  • Repeat the shaking process with the remaining cereal and powdered sugar in a separate bag.
  • Spread the finished puppy chow on a baking sheet to cool completely, then store in an airtight container.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of salt to the chocolate mixture. Get creative with variations by adding other powdered toppings like cocoa powder, cinnamon sugar, or even crushed freeze-dried fruit for different puppy chow flavors. Keep in mind that peanut butter can vary in consistency; if your mixture is too thick, a tiny splash of milk can help smooth it out. You can also make this recipe in a slow cooker by melting the chocolate, peanut butter, and butter on low heat for an hour, stirring occasionally, then proceeding with the coating and shaking steps.
