Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Damp cloth
  • 9x5 inch loaf pans (3)

Ingredients

Bread Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 1/2 cups warm water (105-115 degrees F/40-46 degrees C)
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it stand for 5 minutes until it forms a creamy foam.
  • Stir in sugar, salt, and canola oil into the yeast mixture.
  • Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until a shaggy dough forms.

Kneading and Rising

  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to coat, then cover with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour until doubled in size.

Baking

  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into three equal pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a loaf and place them into greased 9x5 inch loaf pans.
  • Cover the pans and let the loaves rise again for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.

Notes

Ensure your yeast is active by checking for foam after dissolving in warm water. For a softer crust, brush the warm loaves with butter after baking.
